Petition update 2, 04 August 2011

The Executive considered the petition at its meeting on 26 July 2011 and resolved the following:

(i) to confirm that the Council’s commitment to grant aid the Basingstoke Canal Authority at £10,000 in 2011/12; and

(ii) that the relevant Scrutiny Committee be asked to investigate further the funding issues relating to the Basingstoke Canal and in particular to examine in detail the Canal Authority’s expenditure allocation and income production.

Petition update 1, 05 July 2011

The e-petition relating to the funding of the Basingstoke Canal will be considered and debated at a meeting of the Council's Executive on 26 July 2011.

The meeting starts at 6 pm and will be held in the Council Chamber at the Council Offices in Knoll Road, Camberley.

We the undersigned urge Surrey Heath Borough Council to fully meet the funding requirements requested by the Basingstoke Canal Authority (Approx £27,000 for 2010-2011 of which SHBC have only agreed to provide £10,000), (£11,000 for 2009-2010 from a requested £27,526). For many years SHBC have failed to meet their funding requirements, this has contributed to a degradation of the canal environment. It is estimated that the canal benefits the local economies to the level of over £5,000,000 per annum. In view of the importance attributed to it in the recently published SHBC “Core Strategy” consultation document and more recently the “Deepcut SPD” consultation document. It appears contradictory to fail to provide the funds required to allow the BCA to undertake the work required to maintain the canal environment at a level that contributes to the social and economic wellbeing of the community and which the local community should have a right to expect.
